  • NATURE WALK

    It is an interpretive sandal protection trekking program offering excellent opportunity for watching birds, butterflies and other wildlife through a range of habitats during the 4-5 km 2.5-hours walk. These programs are offered between 7 am to 3 pm in different nature trails inside the Park. A maximum of 6 persons can go for trekking at a time along each trail accompanied by a trained tribal guide. It is a program where one can feel nature’s whispers and her sighs.

  • BULLOCK CART RIDE

    Cart ride includes a visit to the farmlands of a village in the valleys beyond the Periyar Tiger Reserve in a bullock cart. An optional coracle ride on the lake is also provided in the package. A guide will accompany you in this visit to the farmlands.

    Such a visit provides insight into traditional ways of farming and the culture and lifestyle of the people there. At the village, there are vineyards, fields with diverse agricultural crops such as mangoes, tamarind, onions etc. as well as flowers like the sunflower, the jasmine and so on. The journey also offers a glimpse into the rich avian fauna of the region.

    This is one of the most popular programmes in Thekkady. The jeep safari to GAVI, picturesque land, is the major offthe- track destination ideal for a wildernessretreat replete with trekking, birding, canoeing and facilities for boarding. Trekking through forest under trained guide after breakfast, return by 12.30, have south Indian Vegetarian lunch and thereafter boating in GAVI Lake (row boat), visit cardamom plantations and curing house,Sabarimala view point.Return after evening tea by 3.30 PM.

  • LOCAL SIGHT SEEING

    This programme include only safari. Food and entrance extra. On the way lucky one can see wild animals in a short distance.

    Ottakathalamedu has started becoming popular among tourists very recently. Situated at an altitude of 1300 m above sea level, it offers a breath-taking view of Kumily, Periyar Tiger Reserve, spice gardens and some villages of Tamil Nadu.

    Pandikuzhi is a popular picnic spot between Chellarkovil and the Tamil Nadu border, 5 kilometres from Thekkady. Getting photographed at the most picturesque site surrounded by lush foliage is a great way to get some fantastic trekking opportunities.

    Chellarkovil, The small quiet village considers being the best tourist spot in the Idukki district and attracts tourists from all over the world. It also offers a scenic view to the plains of Tamil Nadu from the height of 1200m above the sea level.

  • Do not stop the vehicle not more than 5 minutes in the reserve
  • Do not light fires, or smoke inside protected areas. Accidental forest fires cause irreparable damage.

  • KATHAKALI

    Kathakali is one of the oldest theatre forms in the world. It originated in the area of south-western India now known as the state of Kerala. Kathakali is a group presentation, in which dancers take various roles in performances traditionally based on themes from Hindu mythology, especially the two epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. One of the most interesting aspects of Kathakali is its elaborate make-up code. Characters are categorized according to their nature.

    Kalaripayattu the oldest of martial arts-is a gift to the modern world and known as the mother of all martial arts. Legend traces the 3000-year old art form to sage Parasurama the master of all martial art forms and credited to be the re-claimer of Kerala from the Arabian Sea. Kalaripayattu originated in ancient south India. Kung-fu, popularized by the monks of the shaolin temple traces its ancestry to Bodhi Dharma-an Indian Buddhist monk and Kalaripayattu master.

  • SPICE TOUR

    As you take a walk along the streets of Kumily or the winding pathways among the plantations, the thing that strikes you first is the lingering aroma in the air. The scent may be of cloves, nutmeg, pepper, cinnamon or cardamom and sometimes a fragrance that combines the scents of two or more spices. The geographical and climatic peculiarities of Kumily such as the cool climate and its elevation from the sea level make it ideal for spice cultivation.

  • BAMBOO RAFTING – FULL DAY

    This is a dawn-to-dusk range hiking and rafting program through some of the richest forest tracts of Periyar Tiger Reserve. Starting at 8 am from the boat landing, a mosaic of habitats will be traversed before the party gets into rafts made of bamboos. The forests are rich in bird life and arboreal animals like giant squirrel and Nilgiri langur. Rafting lasts for about three hours and one gets a panoramic view of forest-clad hills reflected on the lake. Animals like elephant, gaur and Sambar are sighted keeping close to the edges of the lake. The team hitchhikes back to the boat landing by about 5 pm. An armed guard and 4 guides will accompany a maximum of 15 tourists. Tea, snacks and packed lunch will be served en route. This package is an excellent program for semi-serious nature lovers to feel the beauty of Nature.

  • BAMBOO RAFTING – Half DAY

    A dawn to afternoon range hiking and rafting program through some of the richest forest tracts of Periyar Tiger Reserve., a mosaic of habitats will be traversed before the party gets into rafts made of bamboos. By rafting you will get a panoramic view of forest-clad hills. Animals like Elephant, Gaur and Sambar deer are sighted keeping close to the edges of the lake. This program works at two slots of 7:30 A.M to 12:30 P.M & 9:30 A.M to 2:30 P.M. You will be provided with packed food. The program has 3-4 hours trekking and 1 hour rafting.

  • BOATING @ PERIYAR LAKE

    Periyar Tiger Reserve offers 1.5 hrs boating trips at the lake near the sanctuary. A herd of elephants or a group of sambar deer are common sights near the lake. You may be able to spot herds of Gaur and wild boars in the grasslands adjacent to the shores. A variety of avian fauna such as darters, egrets and kingfishers can be seen resting on dead tree trunks that stick out over the lake. During your boat ride, there is also a high probability of

  • BORDER HIKING

    It is day-long range hiking program along the borders of Periyar Tiger Reserve. The route passes through undulating terrains and altitudinal ranges of 900 m to 1300 m where the trekkers can glimpse the lofty escarpments bordering the park, watersheds and the vast stretches of Cumbam Valley below. Gaur, sloth bear, elephants are often sighted apart from birds and butterflies. A maximum of 12 tourists can take part in the program in 2 different groups. The trekkers along with two guides and an armed forest guard participate in the program which starts at 8 am and ends in the evening.

  • JUNGLE SCOUT

    This is a regular night patrolling program in the fringes of the Eco development zone of the Tiger Reserve in the company of armed guards between 7 P.M and 4 A.M (7 P.M -10 P.M, 10 P.M – 1 A.M, and 1 A.M – 4 A.M). This program injects excitement into the experience while keeping smugglers at bay. The program also provides fascinating macro photography opportunities. One really feels like a cop protecting the precious forest wealth. Of course, these best suits younger visitors fit and disciplined enough to walk in the silence of the night.

  • PUGMARK TRAIL

    The newly introduced self-guided trek at Periyar Tiger Reserve now explores the beauty of nature through a self-guided soft trekking. In this program the tourists will be guided by a number of bio-diversity themes, pictures of birds carved out in stone, tree species name board etc. The trekking starts from entrance gate and ends up near to the boat landing area.

  • TRIBAL ART PERFORMANCE

    The youth of the Mannan and Paliyan tribes living in the fringes of the Park are eager to revive their forgotten culture and the folklores. They have been successful in documenting the lost traditional dance forms of their cult and are all set to launch the traditional dance programmes.
